I drove trucks as a civilian and learned that people just have no clue how to drive around big trucks. The insanity I saw by motorists was scary. It takes a real professional to drive a rig because as you have said, it can be very dangerous in the wrong hands.

This isn't simply the government allowing it, I've worked for truck companies who hired illegals to drive and laughed at how easy it was to screw them with cheap wages. They'd give them top of the line Kenworth T800's to drive and make us US drivers drive old beat up Mack's that were nothing but 1 huge violation. I had a good HP officer who helped me get 6 bald tires replaced on my trucks and later an electrical light failure on the trailer back. He knew what I was up against and told his superiors that they should help me every chance they got. I worked for another company and told them the officer friendly story and warned if you don't want to repair my truck I'll go find officer friendly to write me up a ticket so you can pay him to force you to fix my truck and it will cost the company more in the long run. It got so bad at one point a small town police chief drove miles out of his way to the highway and chased me down. An HP officer pulled up and I said officer I didn't do anything wrong, I don't understand what's going on. He said I know, your not in trouble, we're here to help, let us handle it and then you can go. When he returned to the window he said next time you hear officer down on the radio, look for us, we'll be coming to help you. I didn't tell him I didn't have a police scanner, so I wouldn't hear the officer down bulletin. They knew I was on their side, not their enemy. The stories I could tell are not good.

While attending truck driving school in Utah, our driving instructor had us going down the interstate with a long step grade to help us learn how to go down such steep grades safely. As we were going down it he told us about an illegal who was driving a truck with no brakes, his wife and 2 children in the sleeper and one in the passenger seat with seat belt on. He didn't know to downshift to at least 5th gear and start at a speed of about 25 mph using jake brake and squeeze braking to keep the truck moving slow, downshifting even lower if needed. And with no brakes his truck was moving at 120+mph down the slope. As we came to a sharp bend in the road, he said you see that spot way over there on that far ridgeline, that's where his truck impacted because he couldn't make the turn at such a high rate of speed and went airborne after plowing through the guard rail. I'm sure you can figure out what happened to his family, especially his wife and 2 children in the sleeper who had no seat belts, thus became a flying projectile forward upon impact. Driving a rig that can weigh 80,000 fully loaded isn't like driving a car or pickup. You have to know what your doing and even then when accidents happen, they can be devastating. When I got my license, I bowed my head in prayer saying, Father if it gets so bad out there on the road that I'm totally overcome by evil and must absolutely have an accident, please let me run off the road into the ditch or out in a field so no one is hurt of killed, I couldn't live with that on my mind. Well that day came and He blacked me out just prior to my rig going over in the ditch, no one was hurt or killed except me. He sent someone to say wake up buddy, get up, and I began to come to and wake up. Life went on, but that was the cue, my truck driving days were over. I thank God for answering my prayer and not allowing me to injure or kill anyone.
