A beacon of hope emerged as the Dutch Parliament approved a motion advocating for a postponement of the vote on amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) and the proposed Pandemic Treaty. Now, as we await the response from the Dutch cabinet detailing their plan of action, optimism fills the air.
April 16, 2024: The Hague - The Netherlands should ask for a delay from the World Health Organization (WHO) on voting on a new Pandemic Treaty. A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives believe the treaty is being rushed through too quickly while it has far-reaching implications.
More time is needed for their consideration and testing, argues MP Mona Keijzer (FarmerCitizen Movement Party) who submitted a motion together with New Social Contract Party and Party for Freedom. "There is insufficient opportunity to examine the amendments and their important legal, health, economic, financial and human rights implications."
These parties are also concerned that the Netherlands will lose its voice on deciding how to deal with a possible future pandemic. The Farmer-Citizen Party and Party for Freedom, among others, fear that the Netherlands will be forced through the WHO to take measures that the Netherlands does not want.
The House of Representatives is not reassured and instructed [Outgoing Minister Pia] Dijkstra to request a postponement. Should that not be forthcoming, the House believes the cabinet should vote against the new pandemic treaty.
In November 2023, numerous WHO member states expressed serious reservations regarding the substance of the proposed WHO treaty, widening the gap between countries. This divide could potentially lead to states withdrawing or demanding a delay in the adoption of the treaty, alleviating the sole responsibility from the US to reject the current treaties sought by Tedros in May. Key concerns were raised regarding intellectual property rights, financing, pathogen access and benefits sharing, and commitments on public funding for research and development. Discussions also revolved around intellectual property, technology transfer, the functioning of a Pathogens Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) system, and governance questions on supply chain management.
Adding to the apprehension, the WHO announced that the financial requirements of member states wouldn't be disclosed until 2026, after the signing of the treaties. This lack of transparency raised serious concerns among many states.
As these great chasms in international health governance continue to be weighed and debated, it is our fervent hope that the gravity of these serious concerns will result in a collective retreat from the current trajectory and restore the role of the World Health Organization (WHO) that serves primarily as a neutral tracker of disease transmission and an advisory council.
Until the WHO undergoes a comprehensive restructuring of leadership that is not influenced and controlled by the Chinese Communist Party or Bill Gates, their primary financier, efforts for the US to Defund and Exit the WHO remain paramount.
