Nikki Haley's presidential campaign has portrayed her as a robust China hawk, condemning the nation as the "strongest and most disciplined enemy" faced by the U.S. Yet, a closer look at her record as the governor of South Carolina reveals a different story.

While she now emphasizes a tough stance on China, her tenure as governor involved embracing business deals with Chinese companies. In 2016, she celebrated a deal with China Jushi, a fiberglass company with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, praising the move as a "fantastic announcement." During her governorship, Haley actively recruited Chinese companies, fostering Chinese investment in South Carolina. In 2015, she ranked No. 1 among Republican governors in Chinese investment, attracting over $565 million for the year.

Critics argue that Haley's past actions contradict her campaign narrative. Her administration oversaw $1.43 billion in Chinese investment, making her one of the leading Republican governors in this regard. When confronted about her past efforts to attract Chinese businesses, Haley downplays her involvement, facing criticism for potentially mischaracterizing her record.

One notable instance is the China Jushi deal, where Haley, in a 2016 video message, expressed regret for not being present at the signing ceremony in Zhejiang Province. The deal involved granting nearly 200 acres of county-owned land in South Carolina's Richland County to China Jushi at no cost.

It's crucial to highlight China Jushi's deep connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Notably, the board chairman Chang Zhangli is a member of the company's dedicated Communist Party Committee, underscoring the intertwining of the company's leadership with the CCP. Furthermore, China National Building Material Company Limited, a state-owned entity, owns nearly 27% of China Jushi, with several of its top officials also holding memberships in the Chinese Communist Party. The Jushi Group, with total assets exceeding 30 billion yuan, operates globally with a significant presence in South Carolina, boasting a fiberglass production capacity of up to 2 million tons. The deal that brought China Jushi to South Carolina, celebrated by Haley as a "huge win" for the state, raises questions about the alignment of such agreements with American interests, given the company's affiliations with the Chinese Communist Party.

Nikki Haley's decision to actively court China Jushi, inviting them to set up shop in South Carolina, is a glaring contradiction to her purported "America First" stance. This deliberate effort to pit foreign entities against American companies raises serious concerns about her allegiance to domestic economic interests. While she touted the deal as a "huge win" for the state, the reality of fostering competition with American businesses, coupled with a generous land deal, demands a closer look at the potential harm inflicted on American workers and enterprises.

As Haley now postures herself as tough on China, supporters of the "America First" agenda, especially in Iowa, should question the conspicuous absence of a more assertive push to attract U.S.-owned companies, spotlighting the questionable implications of cozying up to a foreign adversary like China. This inquiry aims to expose any inconsistencies and ensure that policies truly align with the principles of safeguarding American interests and bolstering our national economic competitiveness.
