Act for America is turning up the heat in the state with a new Ohio Parents for Education Reform campaign which aligns with our 50-state campaign approaching 1 million actions.
In the Ohio campaign for education reform, the spotlight falls on the newly appointed State Director of Education, Stephen Dackin. Handpicked by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to lead the newly established Department of Education and Workforce initiated last summer, Dackin's role parallels his former position as the state superintendent. The restructuring of the Department of Education, though still in existence, has undergone a shift in responsibilities, narrowing its focus to teacher licensure, school territory changes, and related matters. Meanwhile, curriculum development and testing now fall under Dackin's purview, making him a crucial figure in the push for education reform in Ohio.
In Ohio, a concerning reality casts a shadow over the educational landscape as recent data reveals that 40% of 3rd graders in the state are not proficient in reading at their grade level. It is time to engage with schools, educators, and policymakers to ensure that the focus on fundamental skills remains a top priority.
In December, Governor Mike DeWine defied the will of the people and vetoed legislation that aimed to restrict transgender youth from accessing gender-affirming care and participating in athletics with cisgender peers in middle and high schools. Despite the governor's decision, the contentious debate is now reignited and placed squarely in the hands of Ohio parents and voters.
