A Muslim student lived in our home for a year. I wore shorts and tank tops. He did not run away in terror or try to throw a hijab on my head. (His mother and sisters don't even wear them. And they have jobs outside the home.)
When he first moved in, I told him I didn't know how to cook halal. He told me not to worry. All he asked is that I not serve pork or any food with alcohol in it. Other than that, whatever I served was fine. I have Jewish relatives, so I was familiar with the dietary thing.
During Ramadan, when he was fasting, I would not serve dinner until after sundown so we could enjoy our meal as a family. He insisted that we didn't have to accommodate him, but we did willingly. He moved to a nearby city two years ago, and we still think of him as one of our children. He comes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. His mother is grateful that her son has people that he thinks of as family while he is here, on the other side of the globe.
